And we are not ones to judge. Whether you like your marshmallow more raw, medium-rare, or well-done, this guide will help you reach your roasting goals because we all know this is an integral part of camping.


Aim for somewhere around 6 inches above the coals to reach the perfect temperature and roasting conditions. Ideally you would have the coals shaped into almost a cave-like form that allows heat to equally reach the marshmallow from all side.

While most people opt to use store-bought marshmallows in their roasting adventures, you can use homemade marshmallows in your campfire s'mores if you want. You simply need to follow a couple of precautions if you are opting to use homemade 'mallows instead of the type you buy in a bag.


The publication advises home cooks to ensure their marshmallows are at least 1 and 1/4 inch thick if roasting them over an open flame is part of the plan. In addition, they should sit out for several days before attempting to roast them. The blog notes that marshmallows that are too fresh will melt instead of roast, and the sticky mess won't be any good for eating or sandwiching between graham crackers and chocolate.


Learning about science may not sound like fun at first, but if you look at the world around you, it is clear to see that science education can actually be fun! For example, while at your summer evening campfire, rather than sharing ghost stories, try to spark some science learning with the kids (and adults too!) by asking some pointed questions. Michigan State University Extension recommends using the science behind roasting marshmallows as a great way to incorporate science education.
